Monday October 1 must be logged in the history books. Or, just Evelyn's baby book. This little girl, the one who we've dreaded potty training, decided to potty train herself.
A few weeks prior I bought some underwear and a package of pull-ups for her. I bought her a little potty because while Wilson had no problem using a step stool and a little toddler seat for the big potty, Evelyn screamed with horror when we attempted to sit her on the potty for experience-sake. She was obviously scared of falling in. We showed her the little potty and underwear and while she seemed amused by the novelty of it all, we didn't really press it.
Occasionally, maybe 5-6 times over the course of 2 weeks, she would say "potty" and we would sit her down to no avail. She just seemed to like having access to the toilet paper now. So when she said "potty" that Monday we were in middle of the night's chaos - I'd gotten home late again, Kevin was preparing supper and we were cramming a day of conversation into a short period of time. We both sighed and I said to Kevin, "Just take her even though nothing will probably happen - we don't want to discourage her." But to our surprise it happened. She beamed as we congratulated her while Wilson quickly got on the big potty to remind us that he, too, knew the drill. That night as we got her ready for bed she screamed bloody murder as Kevin dared put a diaper on her vs. the pull-ups she'd quickly become accustomed to in 2 short hours.
Ever since, when we are at home on nights or weekends she will use the potty - sometimes even the big potty without the toddler seat, unassisted. She has yet to do it for the babysitters for some reason, but there is no doubt she's got this down.
Wilson was potty trained in 3 days before he was 2 years old. We had dreaded potty-training Evelyn but as it turns out, she was even easier. She trained herself.
